A Systematic Look at the Temperature Gradient Contribution to the Dayside Magnetopause Current
نویسندگان
چکیده
Magnetopause diamagnetic currents arise from density and temperature driven pressure gradients across the boundary layer. While theoretically recognized, contributions to magnetopause current system have not yet been systematically studied. To bridge this gap, we used a database of Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) crossings analyze densities their dayside flank magnetopause. Our results indicate that ion gradient component makes up 37% along typically opposes classical Chapman-Ferraro direction, interfering destructively with component, thus lowering total density. This effect is most pronounced on The electron was found be 5 14 times weaker than average.

Distinguishing between pulsed and continuous reconnection at the dayside magnetopause
Magnetic reconnection has been established as the dominant mechanism by which magnetic fields in different regions change topology to create open magnetic field lines that allow energy and momentum to flow into the magnetosphere. One of the persistent problems of magnetic reconnection is the question of whether the process is continuous or intermittent and what input condition(s) might favor on...
متن کاملExtended magnetic reconnection across the dayside magnetopause.
The extent of where magnetic reconnection (MR), the dominant process responsible for energy and plasma transport into the magnetosphere, operates across Earth's dayside magnetopause has previously been only indirectly shown by observations. We report the first direct evidence of X-line structure resulting from the operation of MR at each of two widely separated locations along the tilted, subso...
متن کاملDouble Star TC-1 observations of component reconnection at the dayside magnetopause: a preliminary study
In spring 2004 Double Star TC-1 measured a number of reconnection signatures at the dayside low-latitude magnetopause (MP) when there was a notable By component in the magnetosheath. In a number of events we can show that reconnection was operating nearby TC-1 in the subsolar MP region. In this paper we describe three representative events: (a) event on 21 March 2004 in which the reconnection s...
متن کاملIonospheric Ion Upwelling in the Wake of Flux Transfer Events at the Dayside Magnetopause
The effects of flux transfer events (FTE) on the dayside auroral ionosphere are studied, using a simple twin-vortex model of induced ionospheric plasma flow. It is shown that the predicted and observed velocities of these flows are sufficient to drive nonthermal plasma in the F region, not only within the newly opened flux tube of the FTE, but also on the closed, or "old" open, field lines arou...
متن کاملDistinct characteristics of asymmetric magnetic reconnections: Observational results from the exhaust region at the dayside magnetopause
Magnetic reconnection plays a key role in the conversion of magnetic energy into the thermal and kinetic energy of plasma. On either side of the diffusion region in space plasma, the conditions for the occurrence of reconnections are usually not symmetric. Previous theoretical studies have predicted that reconnections under asymmetric conditions will bear different features compared with those ...
